Pioneer of the Ancient Astronaut Theory

Erich von Däniken — the Swiss author whose provocative ideas reshaped the way millions of people think about humanity’s origins — has passed away at the age of 90. His representatives confirmed that he died on January 10–11, 2026, in a hospital in central Switzerland, where he spent his final days.

Von Däniken’s groundbreaking 1968 book Chariots of the Gods? ignited a global movement by proposing that ancient civilizations—from the Egyptians to the Maya—were visited and influenced by extraterrestrial beings. This book alone sold millions of copies and eventually helped launch an entire genre of inquiry blending archaeology, mythology, and cosmic speculation. Over his lifetime, he authored more than 40–60 books (depending on classification), which collectively sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and were translated into over 30 languages.

Though his theories were often dismissed by academics and criticized as pseudoscience, von Däniken’s impact on culture is undeniable. His ideas inspired films, television, comics, and especially the long‑running series Ancient Aliens, where he frequently appeared as a commentator. His work also influenced creators behind The Eternals, Prometheus, Stargate SG‑1, and Battlestar Galactica, weaving his imaginative hypotheses into the fabric of modern science‑fiction storytelling.
